10th Sunday after Pentecost [Ordinary 18B] – Words for Worship (Year B)

Call to Worship (based on Psalm 51:1-12)

Have mercy on us, Holy One, according to your unfailing love.

Wash away any traces of unworthiness, and strip us of our sin and guilt.

Let our brokenness be healed; let your justice be the source of our gladness.

Create clean and welcoming hearts within us, God.  Fill us with spirits of gentleness, humility, patience, and love; and restore us as your people!

Prayer of Confession (inspired by Ephesians 4:1-16)

We are called to live lives that are worthy of the name “child of God”, but we fail to do that more often than we succeed.  We are full of pride and brash behaviors.  We are impatient with our sisters and brothers, and we quickly abandon or strike out against anyone who disagrees with us.  Forgive us for our violent ways, Holy God.  Remind us that unity does not require uniformity, and teach us to see that you created your one Body to have many parts.  Give us grace and wisdom to work together as your people, that we may show your love and be imitators of you.
