16th Sunday after Pentecost (Year C)

knit togetherWorship Ideas

  • Inspired by Psalm 139: Do you have people in your congregation who know how to knit? Invite them to teach some basic knitting skills to the congregation.  This could be a fun way to encourage a prayer shawl ministry…
  • Inspired by Jeremiah 18: Are there any potters in your congregation (or community)?  Invite them to create/craft things during your worship service (as an interesting visual as you preach/worship).
  • Inspired by Jeremiah 18: Give a small piece of clay (or Model Magic) to everyone in the congregation. Invite them to create something during the service. Talk about how it would be impossible to shape and re-shape the clay if it were not flexible. How is that also true about us and how we interact with God?

Liturgy Suggestions

Call to Worship (inspired by Jeremiah 18)

Today, we meet the One who formed us from the earth.

The Lord shapes us and re-shapes us, according to his wisdom.

O praise the Lord!

The Lord’s name be praised!

Responsive Prayer of Confession (based on Psalm 139)

Holy God, you know us inside and out.

You know our ups and our downs, our strengths and our shortcomings.

You know the best roads for us to take.

And you know that we don’t always take them.

You created us for your glory,

but we live as though things as all about us.

Forgive us, Lord.

Help us to see ourselves as you created us to be; and guide us to live more faithfully, we pray.
