17th Sunday after Pentecost [Ordinary 25B] – Words for Worship (Year B)

Call to Worship (based on and inspired by James 4:7-8)

People of God, let go of all that holds you back and give yourselves to the Holy One.

We will turn away from the Evil One, and we will rejoice as the devil runs far from us!

Come closer, cherished ones – the Lord is drawing near!

As we gather in God’s presence, we will lift our voices together in songs of praise!

Prayer of Confession (based on Mark 9:33-35)

Patient Lord, we confess that we frequently bicker amongst ourselves.  We argue about who is the best Christian.  We fight about issues of doctrine, dogma, and discipleship.  And while we waste time arguing with one another, there are children who go to sleep hungry, there are women who have no coats to keep them warm, and there are men who need a safe place to live.  Call to us, once again, dear Lord — sit down with us and show us the better way.  Teach us to put away our foolish bickering so that we may learn to be servants of all.
