  • The reading from 1 Timothy 2:1-7 could be used as the basis of a service that is centered around prayer practices.
  • It could be tempting to read Psalm 79:1-9 as if we have never been guilty of any of the sins described by the psalmist – pretending that only “other people/nations” are guilty. Use this reading as the inspiration for a time of corporate confession, seriously considering the ways that we have done these types of things.
  • Most church people are familiar with the phrase “balm in Gilead” that we find in Jeremiah 8:18-9:1. Why not set up an interactive worship experience for people to create their own “balm”? There are several recipes for homemade lotions and salves online. Here are a few:

Liturgy Suggestions

Call to Worship (inspired by 1 Timothy 2:1-7)

Come, let us bring our prayers to the Lord.

Prayers for the rich and prayers for the poor – we lift them all to God.

As there is one God, we are called to be one people.

Today, let us be united by the love of Christ.

Prayer of Confession (inspired by Psalm 79:1-9)

God of our salvation, we admit that we do not live as you would have us live. We squander your gifts. We defile your holy places. We neglect the needs of our sisters and brothers. In your mercy, pour out your love and forget your anger. For your glory, deliver and forgive us.
