23rd Sunday after Pentecost (Year C)

NestWorship Ideas

  • The Joel 2:23-32 reading makes mention of grain and wine and oil.  Decorate your worship space with overflowing containers of grains, bottles/carafes of wine, and bottles/bowls of oil.
  • Psalm 65 could be read after the Prayer of Confession and Declaration of Forgiveness — use it as an ascription of praise, reading it in unison.
  • Psalm 84:1-7 mentions sparrows and swallows finding homes. Decorate your worship space with bird nests.
  • Preaching on 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18? Decorate your worship space using sports paraphernalia — use items such as checkered flags, boxing gloves, and/or running shoes.
  • Looking for some mission project ideas to go with the 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 reading? Try one of these:
    • Collect sports equipment (new or gently used) to donate to a local shelter or other charity.
    • Are lots of your youth involved with sports on Sunday morning?  Organize a group (maybe the whole congregation) to go to a game to cheer on the youth from the church and community!
  • The Luke 18:9-14 passage can easily be presented as a dramatic reading.

Liturgy Suggestions

Call to Worship (inspired by Psalm 84:1-7)

Happy are those who live in God’s house;

Delighted are those who sing God’s praises!

The Lord provides the strength that we need.

The glory of God will be made known in this place!

Prayer of Confession (inspired by Luke 18:9-14)

Righteous God, we confess that we are arrogant when we are called to be meek.  Too often, we praise ourselves instead of praying for forgiveness.  Too often, we point fingers at others instead of admitting our own wrongdoings.  Forgive us, we pray.  Teach us to be humble, Lord Jesus, that we may exalt your Holy Name by following you more faithfully.
