5th Sunday After Epiphany (Year B) – Words for Worship

Call to Worship (based on Psalm 147:1)

Lift up your voices, you people of God!

Raise up your voices in songs of praise!

Let us sing praises to the Holy One!

Joyfully, let us celebrate the God of Grace!

Prayer of Confession (inspired by 1 Corinthians 9:16-23)

God, we have no ground for boasting, and yet we do it all the time.  Instead of sharing the good news of your love and grace freely, too often we try to add cover charges of guilt and shame.  Holy One, strip us of our self-righteous ways.  Open our eyes to see diversity instead of difference.  Transform us to be a people who live expecting to serve, rather than expecting to be served.  Guide us to be who you call us to be, so that we may embody the gospel and offer it freely to all others in your name.

Prayer for Illumination (inspired by Isaiah 40:21-31)

Creating God, it has been told to us since the very beginning that you are truly the Lord of all that is and ever shall be.  You are the God of both the prince and pauper, of feast and famine, of the mighty and the weak — and yet, you do not favor the strong over the powerless.  Remind us of your love as we read the scriptures, O God of True Justice.  Open our eyes – open our hearts – that we may be strengthened and renewed by your Word.
