6th Sunday After Pentecost (Year C)

grapesWorship Ideas

  • Does your congregation work with a local food pantry or soup kitchen?  Inspired by the “fruits of the Spirit” in Galatians 5, invite the congregation to collect fresh fruits or canned fruits that can be given to the pantry or distributed at a soup kitchen.
  • What symbols can you think of that remind us of each of the fruits of the Spirit?  Use these symbols to illustrate your reading/preaching of Galatians 5:1, 13-25.
  • It isn’t easy to follow Jesus (Luke 9:51-62).  Invite the congregation to play “Follow the Leader” during worship to help illustrate the adventure of following the Lord.

Liturgy Suggestions

Call to Worship (inspired by Galatians 5:1, 13-25)

We are called to freedom.

In Christ, we are free to love one another.

We are called to live by the Spirit.

Guided by the Spirit, we will produce good fruit.

Prayer for Illumination (based on 2 Kings 1:6-14)

Lord, as we turn to read and hear your Word, fix our eyes and hearts upon you. Let us see your glory, that we may receive a double share of your Spirit.

Prayer of Confession (based on Psalm 77:1-2, 11-20)

Holy One, we cry out to you, confessing our need for forgiveness and comfort.  You, O God, have the power to work wonders and redeem your people.  Rescue us, and led us by your hand through the troubled waters of life.

Responsive Charge and Benediction (inspired by Luke 9:51-62)

Choose this day to follow Christ where he leads.

Looking forward to the future God is creating, we will follow the Lord!

Disciples, let us go forth in peace!

Together, let us serve the Lord!  Alleluia!  Amen!
