Baptism of the Lord Sunday (Year B) – Words for Worship

Call to Worship (based on Genesis 1:1-5 and Mark 1:4-11)

In the beginning of God’s creating, the Spirit of the Lord swept over the unsettled and unorganized chaos and spoke:

“Let there be light!”

At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, the Spirit of the Lord broke through the unsettled and unorganized wilderness and spoke:

“This is the Light!”

At the beginning of our worship, the Spirit of the Lord moves in the midst of the unsettled and unorganized people of God and speaks:

“Follow the Light!”

Together, let us walk in the Light of Christ!

Prayer (based on Genesis 1:1-5, Acts 19:1-7, and Mark 1:4-11)

Creating God, you spoke and the universe was illuminated.  You uttered a word and all was put into its place.   Speak again, Mighty One.  Speak light into our darkness.  Speak order into our chaos.  Bring us up from the depths.  Anoint us with your Spirit.  Break into our lives and remind us that we are your children, beloved and cherished.

Prayer for Illumination (based on Genesis 1:1-5)

Holy One, create a new and ordered place within us.  Sweep over the wild, chaotic waters of our hearts, and speak light into the dark corners of our minds.  Illumine our understanding, that we may hear your voice clearly.  We pray in the name of Christ Jesus, the Light of the World.
