Good Friday – Words for Worship (Year B)

The following prayers and other worship elements were written for use in a Service of Scripture and Prayer.  Hymns would be included following the Prayer of the Day, Second Reading, Silent Meditation, and Litany for Good Friday.  I suggest using hymns that are meditative in nature (such as those written by the Taize community).

Call to Worship (inspired by Hebrews 10:16-25)

We are not afraid to enter this place of worship,

for the Lord has washed us clean through his sacrifice.

Let us enter into God’s presence together.

Let us boldly confess our hope with strong voices, encouraging one another as we witness the coming of the new day.

Prayer of the Day

God of Mercy, you gave us the gift of your only Son, to suffer shame, torture, and death on a cross.  Save us from our selective blindness, Lord.  Give us eyes to see what you have done for us through Christ, so that we may turn around, confess our sins, and receive your gifts of never-ending love with thankful hearts.  We pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer for Illumination (based on Hebrews 10:16-17)

God of the Covenant, as we read your word this day, put your law in our hearts.  Write your commandments on our minds.  Teach us, by your Spirit, to be your faithful people.  We pray these things in the name of Christ.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12

Litany for Good Friday

Blessed Christ, Son of the Creator, conceived by the Spirit, born of a young woman, the Word of the Almighty,

we worship you.

Servant Christ, friend of sinners, the one who touches lepers, the Great Physician, source of all comfort,

we worship you.

Crucified Christ, wellspring of justice and love, provider of all faithfulness, full of kindness and mercy,

we worship you.

Almighty Christ, High Priest of God, King of Heaven, Lord of Lords, Ruler of All Creation,

we worship you.

Jesus, you who bear our sins,

have mercy on us.

Jesus, you who redeem the whole of creation,

have mercy on us.

Holy Lord, be merciful to us, we pray.  Guide us in your paths.  Teach us to share your self-sacrificing love.  Help us to grow in the ways of peace and justice.  And strengthen us to do your will.  In the name of Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Amen.
