Maundy Thursday (Year C)

I wrote several suggestions and reflections last year (Year B), and the readings are the same this year (Year C).  Click here to check it out.

Also, there are liturgy suggestions here.

bread and cupExodus 12:1-4, (5-10), 11-14
  • Common English Bible and NRSV
  • “Paint” the door frames of your worship space red (to simulate the blood painted on the doorposts in the text).  Since paint (or blood – ick) is out of the question, tape red paper or plastic material to the doors.  Have the paper or other material cut out to look like large brushstrokes.
  • The Passover meal is incredibly important to our Jewish sisters and brothers.  Check with your local Jewish synagogue to see if they would appreciate any assistance with any of their preparations or if there are any ways that your church can help the Passover meal possible for those in need.
Psalm 116:1-2, 12-19
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
  • Common English Bible and NRSV
  • Using this passage during Communion?  Why not serve Communion in a new way?  When you break the loaf, break it into large chunks that can be passed from person-to-person, allowing each person to tear off a piece of bread from the same loaf.  Likewise, when you pour the cup, pour several small cups that are easy to pass from person-to-person.  The congregation can then serve each other either partaking by intinction (dipping the bread in the wine/juice) or by eating the bread and drinking from a common cup (if that is common to your tradition).
John 13:1-17, 31b-35
  • Common English Bible and NRSV
  • Give out individual hand wipes (unscented, if possible) to remind the congregation of Jesus’ act of washing his disciples’ feet.
  • Cut out paper hearts, and write “John 13:34-35” on each one.  Give two to each person – one for them to keep, and one for them to give to a neighbor.
